Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Could Be Coming Soon
The impending launch of the Samsung Electronic’s (SSNLF) Galaxy Note 8 smartphone has been rumored for weeks, but it may end up in consumers’ hands earlier than previously thought.
That’s according to reports last week a German retailer started listing the Samsung Galaxy J5 on its website and gave it a release date of June 22. Meanwhile the same smartphone was showing up on Amazon France, which is leading to speculation that an announcement from the South Korean electronics giant could be days if not hours away. The Amazon France listing, which has since been taken down, revealed the Galaxy J5 will be available in gold and black and will sell for 279 euros. Mystery Phone IDed?
In late April, the company confirmed it's gearing up to launch a new smartphone in the second half of the year, which led to speculation that a Galaxy Note version will be joining its S8 line of smartphones. In a press release announcing earnings at the time, it said it’s aiming to improve year-over-year performance by maximizing sales of its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus and “successfully launching a new flagship smartphone in the second half.” The smartphone maker didn’t specifically name the Galaxy Note 8, but all signs point to it.
According to Android Authority, the phone is expected to boast a 5.2-inch HD display and the Exynos 7870 chipset. It’s likely to have 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage that will be expandable via a microSD slot. It’s also rumored to support contactless payments, sport the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system and will have a body that looks similar to other Galaxy devices. Samsung has a huge hit on its hand with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, so much so that consumers have largely forgiven or forgotten about the costly and embarrassing recall of the Galaxy Note 7. Shortly after being launched last fall, reports starting surfacing that the battery on the Note 7 was prone to catching fire. Things got worse when Samsung recalled the phones and many of the replacements also caught fire. Samsung was forced to kill the device altogether, hurting its reputation and paving the way for Apple Inc. (AAPL) and its iPhone to gain market share.
